How do I choose what my 401(k) is invested in?

The answer

First, a reframe: contributing to a 401(k) and investing it are two separate steps, and it's surprisingly common for money to sit in the plan's default option without anyone actively choosing it.

Most plan menus include target-date funds — a single fund labeled with a year near when you might retire (a "2055 fund"), which spreads your money across stocks and bonds and adjusts the mix as the date approaches. They exist precisely so that not wanting to think about this is a valid strategy.

Beyond that, menus typically offer index funds and other options, each with its own fee and mix.

What we won't do here is tell you which fund to pick — that's a decision that deserves your full picture, not a webpage. What's worth doing today: log in and simply *look* at what your money is currently in. Knowing is the whole first step.
